The Mental Model

Instead of viewing Optimization as a rigid formula, think of it as a logical sequence. The only reason it gets complicated is when you start forgetting to check the endpoints of the domain.

If you avoid that pitfall, the shortcut works 100% of the time. Look at this:

If you are maximizing profit on the interval [0, 100], and your critical point is at x=50, you must also plug x=0 and x=100 into the original function.

Once you internalize that specific relationship, you can solve these problems in half the time.
