The Mental Shortcut for Mastering Determinants

Are you consistently losing points on Determinants because of thinking a determinant of 0 means the system has no solutions? If so, you're making the exact same error as 80% of your class.

The Mental Model

Instead of viewing Determinants as a rigid formula, think of it as a logical sequence. The only reason it gets complicated is when you start thinking a determinant of 0 means the system has no solutions.

If you avoid that pitfall, the shortcut works 100% of the time. Look at this:

A determinant of 0 means the matrix is not invertible. The system could have no solutions, OR it could have infinitely many solutions. You must row-reduce to find out.

Once you internalize that specific relationship, you can solve these problems in half the time.
